Ya know, I could swear we just saw State of Play in the theater. Apparently, it was released back in April before all the big summer movies hit the multiplex. Regardless, the theatrical to video window is closing more, with roughly 4 1/2 months between wide release and DVD. Does anyone besides me remember when at least 6 months was the norm?
The DVD and Blu-ray come out on September 1 and in case you don't remember what the movie is about, this is how Universal describes it:
Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams & Helen Mirren in the gripping thriller about deception, manipulation & corruption. When D.C. Reporter Cal McCaffrey (Crowe) is assigned to investigate the murder of an assistant to an up-and-coming politician (Affleck), he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring down the nation’s power structures. In a town of spin-doctors and wealthy power brokers, he will discover one truth: when fortunes are at stake, no one’s integrity, love or life is safe. From director Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, State of Play brings together strong performances, riveting suspense and is “sophisticated, intelligent and powerful” (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).
The DVD sports a 16:9 transfer, English 5.1 Surround Sound (French and Spanish mixes as well), some deleted scenes and "The Making of State of Play" featurette. On the high def version, there's still the 16:9 picture along with an English DTS-HD Master Audio track (French and Spanish DTS mixes, too), and the same deleted scenes and featurette. Exclusive to the BD are two U-Control features: Picture in Picture and Washington, D.C. Locations. BD Live makes an appearance in both My Scenes Sharing and Download Center; and then there's a My Scenes feature.
PS-Remember another Russell Crowe flick is being released the same day. Gladiator makes it's high def debut on September 1. Nice piggy-back release, Universal.
